Chiefs Deal Neuvirth to Banshees

In BOS, CHA, News, Transactions on October 29, 2011 at 7:27 pm

The Charleston Chiefs have solved their brewing goaltending controversy by shipping 23-year-old Michal Neuvirth to the Boston Banshees for veteran winger Mike Knuble and a fourth round pick in 2012.

Neuvirth played 8 games for the Chiefs last season, winning five, but behind Miikka Kiprusoff and Jonathan Quick his chances of playing much were next to nil. Now he’ll be back up Boston workhorse Henrik Lundqvist.

Knuble is a two-time 30-goal scorer about to enter his 13th GWMHL season. He was originally drafted in by Bridgewater in 1998 who later signed as a free agent with the eventual Banshees.

2011 Rookie Draft: Skinner Takes Top Spot

In BAL, GLP, NAS, News, PIT, Transactions on October 23, 2011 at 1:50 pm

The biggest question of the 2011 Rookie Draft was answered in mere moments – Skinner or Hall? The Nashville Knights went with Jeff Skinner, adding to an already deep corps of young forwards. The Great Lakes Pilots would make Taylor Hall the latest addition to the list of high-level draft-day bridesmaids.

Forwards Tyler Seguin (Winnipeg), Jordan Eberle (Ice Harbor), and Derek Stepan (Delta) rounded out the top 5. The first defensemen went sixth – Cam Fowler to the San Francisco Seals. Nashville took the first second goaltender at #21, sparking a run that resulted in netminders drafted in 7 of 20 second rounders.

The Baltimore Crab kicked the day off in a big way, dealing Evgeni Malkin (himself acquired on draft day last year), along with Cal O’Reilly and Bryan McCabe, to the Pittsburgh Hornets in exchange for all four of Pittsburgh’s picks in the draft. It meant that the Crab ended up making 7 selections on the day.

Other minor trades included Ice Harbor dealing its 3rd and 4th rounders to Denver for a 3rd rounder in 2012, and the Night Train shipping blueliner Filip Kuba to South Carolina for a 3rd and 4th.

Midland and Vancouver Swap Forwards

In DEN, News, Transactions, VAN on July 2, 2011 at 9:28 am

The Midland Bulldogs and Vancouver Night Train have kicked off the summer with a center-for-winger swap.

The move sends pivot Tomas Plekanec to Vancouver, who are looking to recapture the ’09-’10 form of a team that was deep up the middle, for winger David Jones.

The Bulldogs are hoping that Jones, who has played 64 games over three seasons for Vancouver, gives them a top-six goal-scorer to play alongside the likes of Vincent Lecavalier, Danny Briere, Mike Richards, and Matt Duchene. Plekanec, meanwhile, is coming off a disappointing year (21 points in 61 games) but will likely see more icetime behind Jonathan Toews on the Night Train.

2011 Mid-Season Free Agent Draft Results

In News, Transactions on March 6, 2011 at 5:02 pm

A handful of teams made use of the 2011 Mid-Season Free Agent draft to shore up their lineups – but the results will likely have no bearing on this year’s playoffs. Oregon got things started by adding solid defender Colin White, Altoona opted for vet presence with Owen Nolan, and Nashville took a flyer on minor leaguer Mike Santorelli.

Read on for the complete round-by-round results.

Night Train Deal Niittymaki

In NAS, News, Transactions, VAN on January 17, 2011 at 10:22 am

The Vancouver Night Train have dealt goaltender Antero Niittymaki to the Nashville Knights. In exchange, the Night Train get Nashville’s third round rookie pick in 2011.

It was no surprise the Train shipped Niittymaki out, as he’d fallen to third on the depth chart behind the younger Pekka Rinne and Ondrej Pavelec. In fact, the only surprise is that Vancouver would trade him to a division rival in Nashville. But both teams are faltering this season, so it’s a low-risk move all around.

Charleston and Vancouver Deal Vets

In CHA, News, Transactions, VAN on October 17, 2010 at 10:47 am

The day after the traditional flurry of Rookie Draft trades, the Charleston Chiefs and Vancouver Night Train have made a swap. With a serious injury to Andrei Markov, Vancouver acquired veteran defenseman Kimmo Timonen from Charleston in exchange for enigmatic forward Alexander Frolov and Vancouver’s third round Rookie Draft pick in 2011.

Draft Day Transactions: Malkin in Blockbuster Swap

In BAL, DEL, DEN, News, Transactions, VAN, WVR on October 16, 2010 at 4:38 pm

It wasn’t as busy as some GWMHL draft days, but today’s Rookie Draft was punctuated with one of the biggest blockbusters in recent memory.

No sooner had the Baltimore Crab picked Matt Duchene second overall did they flip him, along with blueliner Kyle Quincey, to the Midland Bulldogs for Evgeni Malkin and Jamie Langenbrunner. Malkin gives the Crab some top-end talent they’d been sorely lacking.

Baltimore made another trade a round later, picking up young Michael Grabner, who’d just been drafted by the Vancouver Night Train, for a 2nd round pick in 2011.

Vancouver also shored up their defense by dealing a 1st round Free Agent pick to Delta for Adam Foote. And Delta continued their rebuild by sending Brian Rafalski to West Virginia in exchange for Andrew Ladd and a 2nd rounder this year, who turned into Jason Demers.
