Trade Roundup: Getzlaf, Oshie, Howard on the Move

In BAL, BOS, GLP, PAR, Transactions, WVR on September 20, 2018 at 12:41 pm

The Great Lakes Pilots‘ rebuild continues. After parting ways with Sidney Crosby on draft day, the Pilots have shipped out pivot Ryan Getzlaf to the Boston Banshees for a 2nd round pick in 2019.

But that was just one of a flurry of post-draft roster moves as teams solidify their lineups. The West Virginia River Rats picked up winger T.J. Oshie from Parry Sound in exchange for defenseman John Moore and a third round pick. And the Orrsmen followed that with a pair of trades with Boston, first acquiring Brandon Dubinsky for a third, then sending goaltender Jimmy Howard to the Banshees for a trio of Free Agent Draft picks. Finally, Boston shipped steady blueliner Kevan Miller to Baltimore for a 4th round pick in 2019.

Minor Move: Kevan Miller to Boston

In BOS, Transactions, VAN on April 25, 2018 at 10:05 am

In a minor move to shore up its bottom pairing, the Boston Banshees have acquired steady defenseman Kevan Miller from the Vancouver Night Train in exchange for Ice Harbor’s 4th round rookie pick in 2018.

Vancouver had acquired Miller from Parry Sound at the 2017-18 trade deadline in a move that saw Derek Forbort going the other way. He put up one goal and 13 points in 58 regular season games this past season, along with 2 assists in 12 playoff games.

Delta Acquires Muzzin from South Side

In BOS, DEL, SSR, Transactions on April 22, 2018 at 10:43 am

The Delta Sturgeon continue their arms race with divisional rival Ice Harbor, acquiring defenseman Jake Muzzin from the South Side Renegades for Cody Ceci. The Sturgeon hope Muzzin will be able to QB a powerplay that will likely feature shooters like Kucherov, MacKinnon, and Hall. Ceci, five years Muzzin’s junior, better fits the Renegades’ nascent youth movement.

Ceci had 1 goal and 15 assists in 79 games last season. Muzzin had 6 goals and 20 assists in 82 and was a league-worst -50 for the rebuilding Renegades.

In another minor deal, the Renegades acquired 24-year-old defenseman Jake Dotchin and Baltimore’s 3rd round rookie pick (57th) from the Boston Banshees for San Jose’s 3rd rounder (42nd).

Trading Opens with Boston-Ice Harbor Swap

In BOS, IHS, Transactions on April 11, 2018 at 11:38 am

With the Gump Cup awarded, trading opened for the 2018 offseason — and one of the usual suspects was ready to pounce. The Boston Banshees were involved in the first move of the trading period for the fourth year running, sending defender Nick Leddy to the Ice Harbor Storm in exchange for centre Martin Hanzal and the Storm’s 2nd and 4th round picks in the 2018 Rookie Draft.

For Boston, who acquired Leddy just last season, the move may signal the beginning of a retool aimed at getting younger. The Storm, meanwhile, may have finally solved their long-standing need for a left-handed top-pairing defenseman.

Salem Takes Second Straight Title

In BOS, News on March 29, 2018 at 7:01 pm

Entering game 7 of their Gump Cup Final series, the Boston franchise was looking for its first championship since 1998. At stake for Salem: A second straight title and its fifth in six years.

The Sabercats opened the scoring early, Jeff Carter feeding Gustav Nyquist and the puck bouncing in off the post in a goal that was emblematic of what was to come for the Banshees.

Salem carried that lead into the second period, and then carried the game away with trio of goals in just three and a half minutes — first, Bo Horvat beat Matt Murray on a 2-on-1 with Paul Byron, then Patrick Marleau made Zdeno Chara pay for a costly minor with a PP goal, and Logan Couture scored on a breakaway. Horvat would add another goal later in the period, and just like that, in front of a shocked Boston crowd, the dynasty held a 5-0 lead.

The third found the Sabercats playing a cautious game — they would manage just two shots on Murray all period — and Boston pouring it on. But for most of the period, either Fredrik Andersen or bad puck luck (like a Nick Leddy post and an Artem Anisimov whiff on a rebound) got in the way.

With 3:48 left, Alexander Wennberg finally solved Murray after Ryan Ellis cut off a Horvat clearing pass. Then Charlie Coyle split the D to make it 5-2 with under two minutes remaining. But it was, to put it mildly, way too little, way too late. Salem hung on to secure the big 5-2 road victory in game 7 and another banner for its rafters. The Cats are getting older now, but they showed they had at least one more life in them.

Great Lakes Deals Hartnell

In BOS, DEL, DEN, GLP, Transactions on July 2, 2016 at 10:10 am

The Great Lakes Pilots have shipped veteran winger Scott Hartnell to the Delta Sturgeon. In exchange, the Pilots get Brad Richards and Delta’s 4th rounder in 2016. Hartnell is coming off a surprise 52-goal, 92-point season.

From Delta GM Andrew Martin:  “This has nothing to do with Brad Richards. He filled the role we asked him to fill, and was a consummate professional. However, the coaching staff has decided to move Nathan Mackinnon to Center for the upcoming season. This really necessitated us looking at our roster and seeing if we had adequate big bodies to fight in the corners. The answer is a resounding no, and so we have been on the lookout to obtain someone to help dig pucks out for our talented Centermen. We’re happy to have added Scott to our club, and look forward to him helping us in our bid for a playoff spot in the upcoming season.”

In other news, the Boston Banshees sent depth centre Boyd Gordon to the Denver Spurs for Great Lakes’ 4th, previously acquired in the deal that sent Joffrey Lupul to the Pilots.

2012-2013 Award Winners

In BOS, NAS, SAL, SFS, Special Features, STL on August 7, 2013 at 9:07 am

In a season notable for a lack of headline-making offensive performances, many players still shone in the 2012-13 GWMHL regular season. As a few select teams battle it out in the playoffs, we take a (totally biased and absolutely unscientific) look at the players who made the biggest mark on the year.

Scoring Champ

Claude Giroux, Nashville Knights
Giroux won his first-ever — and not likely his last — scoring title in style. With 108 points, he was the only player to surpass 100 and was 11 points up on his nearest competition. Most remarkably, and we’ll circle back to this, is that Giroux finished the year with 42 points more than his nearest teammate, Patrick Kane. Where would the Knights have gotten without him? Not very far.
Honourable Mentions: Erik Cole, Saint Louis Blues (97 points), Patrik Elias, Boston Banshees (96 points)

Sniper Award

Erik Cole, Saint Louis Blues
Erik Cole was lighting it up even before Saint Louis started acquiring a deep supporting cast at the trade deadline.  We didn’t see many stratospheric point totals this season, but Cole had some close competition in the goals race, but the winger — who had 32 goals last season and just 16 the season before — just kept ticking en route to his league-leading 54.
Honourable Mentions: Steven Stamkos, Charleston Chiefs (51 goals), Milan Lucic, Boston Banshees (47 goals)

Alfredsson Gets New Start in Saint Louis

In BOS, News, STL, Transactions on May 8, 2013 at 12:58 pm

After more than 11 seasons, veteran winger Daniel Alfredsson is on his way out of the Boston Banshees franchise. The team’s second all-time leading scorer has been traded to the Saint Louis Blues, who continue to load up on experienced talent, in exchange for winger Matt Frattin and Ice Harbor’s 3rd round pick in 2013. It marks the fourth major deal of the season for the Blues and the second move this week for the Banshees.

Fire Ants Bring In Defensive Help

In BOS, News, SCA, Transactions on May 6, 2013 at 7:02 pm

It isn’t the type of head-turning deal we’ve seen leading up to the trade deadline, but there really are no small moves. Today, the South Carolina Fire Ants acquired the services of defenseman Matt Greene from the Boston Banshees for a third round pick in 2013.

The Banshees have made it known they aren’t giving up – if the playoffs started today, they’d be in – but fine-tuning. In Greene (who was once cut from the Fire Ants, and has 9 assists in 40 games this year) the Ants add another veteran as they try for the post-season. Notably, they’ve now dealt their top three picks in this year’s rookie draft.

Teams Load Up at 2012-13 Rookie Draft

In BOS, DEL, EDH, GLP, IHS, News, SFS, Transactions on January 26, 2013 at 2:26 pm

There were few big surprises on draft day in terms of players selected, but several GWMHL teams still managed to make ripples with some bold trades.

The Delta Sturgeons kicked things off by selecting dynamic centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins first overall, but then the Boston Banshees – who had moved up several spots in the draft lottery – decided to make some noise. Boston dealt the second overall pick to the San Francisco Seals for the Seals’ first rounder (7th overall, Ryan Ellis) and power forward Milan Lucic. To no one’s surprise, the Seals took Gabriel Landeskog with the pick.

Other moves included Delta dealing forward Valtteri Filppula to the El Dorado Lynx for El Dorado’s first rounder (15th, Brendan Smith), Boston flipping a third rounder to the Lynx for steady defender Matt Greene, and the Ice Harbor Storm  trading some picks to the Great Lakes Pilots for a selection next year.
