In 2009-2010, Ice Harbor Storm winger Keith Tkachuk overtook Jaromir Jagr for the GWMHL all-time lead in points and passed Brendan Shanahan for career goals.
Tkachuk will retire at the end of this season. And although this season’s edition of the Storm – a rebuilding squad that’s on its way to missing the playoffs – might not have been able to provide the perfect last hurrah for the winger, he still hangs them up with a Gump Cup in 1999 and well over 600 goals and 1300 points to his name. He’s the first GWMHL player to break either of those barriers and one of the best players the league has seen.
Beginning with the Gump Worsley Memorial Hockey League’s inception in 1993, Tkachuk played 17 seasons – his entire career – with the same club. With Ice Harbor, he would score 60 and 50 goals two times apiece and 40 goals a staggering five times.
The 1999 cup win – which saw the Storm beat the Morgan Hill Lynx in five games – was the pinnacle of Tkachuk’s career. At the time, the Storm were described as a “perennial regular season power and perennial playoff flop.” But those demons were exorcised, and Tkachuk was a big part of the core that led them there. They’d reach the conference final four more times after ’99 but never further.
So, as Tkachuk plays his final quarter in the league, we salute one of the all-time Gump greats.
